Arrive at the Bamboo Grove by 6:00-7:00 AM for magical solitude and beautiful morning light. Most tourists arrive after 10:00 AM. Togetsukyo Bridge is also stunning at sunrise with minimal crowds.
Mid-late November (around November 20-25) is the peak for autumn colors. Jojakko-ji and Nison-in temples offer the most spectacular foliage with fewer crowds than Tenryu-ji. Book accommodations 2 months ahead.
During cherry blossom and autumn foliage seasons, open-air Car 5 tickets sell out 1 month ahead. Book online at JR West the day sales open. Alternatively, weekday early morning departures are easier to secure.
Tenryu-ji garden-only admission (¥500) offers better value than the full ticket (¥800) unless you specifically want to see the Cloud Dragon ceiling painting. The north gate connects directly to the Bamboo Grove.

Saga-Arashiyama Station (JR) is the most convenient for first-time visitors. It's closest to Togetsukyo Bridge and the main sightseeing area. The station has coin lockers and English signage.
Arashiyama Station (Keifuku Randen) is atmospheric and connects directly to downtown Kyoto via the vintage tram. The Kimono Forest installation at the station is worth seeing.
